10 Questions to Ask Before You Pay a Deposit for Surgery Abroad

In short: Before you pay anything, you should know who will operate on you, where, what's included, and what happens if something goes wrong after you're home. Ask any provider these ten questions — including us.

  1. Who will perform my operation? Ask for the surgeon's name and specialist training, and whether that surgeon operates personally.
  2. Will I speak with my surgeon before the day of surgery?
  3. Which hospital will I be treated in, and is it authorised by the Turkish Ministry of Health to treat international patients?
  4. Does the hospital have an intensive care unit on site, in case something unexpected happens?
  5. Who gives the anaesthetic? It should be a qualified anaesthetist.
  6. What exactly is included — hospital nights, hotel, transfers, medicines, compression garments, check-ups — and what costs extra?
  7. What happens to my deposit if I cancel, or if the surgeon decides surgery isn't right for me?
  8. What happens if I need a correction? Get the answer in writing.
  9. Who looks after me when I'm back home, and how do I reach them?
  10. Which medical documents will I take home for my own doctor?

If a provider can't or won't answer clearly, that is an answer too.

Ask us as well. We'll answer every one of these questions in your consultation, before you pay anything.

(Answers about our own surgeons and hospitals are given in the consultation — see "How we select surgeons and clinics".)
